Minister for Police, Corrective Services and Sport
The Honourable Judy Spence

Police Minister Judy Spence has today taken a tour of the property where the new Surfers Paradise Police Station will be established.

Ms Spence said the building in Orchid Avenue will be refurbished, into a state of the art police station for officers in the Gold Coast’s busiest area.

“This government is providing $4 Million to transform this building into one the best police stations in the state,” Ms Spence said.

“The new station will accommodate around 125 officers, as well as civilian staff, customer service officers and cleaners.

“The facilities will include office space for general duties officers and the shift supervisor, an enquiries room, dayroom, conference rooms, meals rooms and holding cells.

“The new location in the heart of Surfers Paradise will also improve the ability of local officers to serve the community and respond to incidents.”

Ms Spence said part of the building was already being used by police, co-ordinating night-time operations during the Lexmark Indy 300.

“This shows just how convenient this location is, for officers working on crime prevention operations in the hub of Surfers Paradise,” Ms Spence said.

“It is great to see this facility being used as a command point for police, even before the refurbishments have occurred.”

Ms Spence said tenders for the refurbishment are expected to be called by Christmas.

“This will allow for the refurbishment to commence in the early stages of 2008, with a planned completion date before next year’s Indy 300,” Ms Spence said.

“The progress of this project is another example of this government’s commitment to providing the resources and infrastructure police need to keep Gold Coast communities safe.”
