The Honourable Lindy Nelson-Carr

Cairns, QLD: Today's Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships Roundtable covered many issues.

Aboriginal Torres Strait Islander Partnerships Minister Lindy Nelson-Carr said it has drawn a sharp focus on the priorities reflected in the Indigenous Partnership Agreements.

"The clear outcome today was a strong feeling by Mayors and community leaders, and representatives all to be a part of the big picture."

"I heard loud and clear that community leaders want to drive the solutions for their communities.

"They are committed and resourceful and want to be involved in developing policies that affect their people and their children."

Ms Nelson-Carr thanked the representatives for sharing their experiences openly.

"This was a meeting held in good faith and it has set the tone for future meetings - and I will be convening two of these each year."

Issues discussed today included local Indigenous Partnership Agreements, with the Minister asking representatives to prepare their plans for implementation early in 2008.

Land tenure drew much discussion, with representatives wanting more discussion about their individual communities and the forthcoming reforms.

"I want to thank Minister Warren Pitt for leading the session on Governance, Leadership and Service Delivery.

"I want to congratulate each of the leaders who took part today.

"They have each moved forward and the shared outcome is that we must keep this momentum.

"The window is open. We need to keep driving forward."
