Joint statement
October is breast cancer awareness month so it is a time for women to come together in hope and remembrance to raise awareness of breast cancer.
Premier Anna Bligh and Minister for Women Margaret Keech are encouraging Brisbane women to join them in showing their support by attending the Mini Field of Women event being organised by breast cancer survivor Bonny Barry, Member for Aspley.
“By coming along and buying a pink silhouette you are representing someone who has been diagnosed or has died from breast cancer,” Ms Bligh said.
“Bonny’s support of this worthy cause is inspirational. This October marks two years of survivorship for Bonny and she has organised this event to give back to the community who cared for her through her battle with breast cancer.
“Her work on behalf of the Breast Cancer Network Australia to increase awareness about breast cancer and support survivors is commendable.
“It is a sad fact that around 12,000 women in Australia will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year alone and one in nine Australian women will be diagnosed with breast cancer by the age of 85,” said Ms Bligh.
Mrs Keech said events like these provide a positive network of people to support women with breast cancer as well as raise awareness and funds for an important issue affecting so many.
“I am looking forward to being a part of this event on Monday and I encourage all women to support this worthy cause.” she said.
Ms Barry said she was delighted that Premier and Minister would be on hand for the gathering.
“Having nursed in this area and having been a patient it has shown to me just how important support of those around you is.
“This is a simple chance for the community to come together to support women they know battling cancer and also those they do not know. Please come along and join the Premier and Minister,” she said.
The Mini Field of Women event will be held on October 22 at 2pm in Marchant Park, corner of Webster and Gympie Roads, Aspley. For more information or to sponsor a pink silhouette phone the Aspley electorate office on 3263 6703.
