Minister for Emergency Services
The Honourable Neil Roberts
The latest group of highly qualified Intensive Care Paramedics (ICPs) has hit the road in Queensland.
In State Parliament today, Emergency Services Minister Neil Roberts announced 14 officers recently achieved the highest level of paramedic qualifications.
Mr Roberts said the addition of the highly qualified ICPs will provide a boost to the state’s emergency pre-hospital health care.
“In addition to the high level of skills held by our Advance Care Paramedics, ICPs can administer a greater range of medicines and perform more complex medical procedures,” Mr Roberts said.
“Their skills will be a excellent addition to the already high level of professionalism displayed by the ambulance officers of Queensland.”
Potential ICPs are rigorously tested through the Graduate Diploma of Intensive Care Paramedic Practice.
“Each ICP student spent time in hospital placements and at least 25 weeks on-road with a qualified intensive care paramedic.
“They also took part in simulated activities including road trauma accidents and multi-casualty incidents.”
Mr Roberts said the Intensive Care Paramedic program demonstrates the Queensland Ambulance Service’s dedication to clinical excellence.
“The ICP program is now in its 10th year in Queensland.
“Their ranks are swelling every year, with more than 200 paramedics having already completed the university training required to become an ICP.”
