Minister for Transport, Trade, Employment and Industrial Relations
The Honourable John Mickel
CAIRNS manufacturers and businesses will have the opportunity to meet trade experts and learn more about expanding their international export base, Minister for Trade John Mickel said today.
“Queensland Government trade specialists will share their knowledge of the fast-growing Middle East markets with companies attending the Doing Business in the Middle East and North Africa Export Seminar,” he said.
Mr Mickel said Queensland Trade and Investment Commissioner in the UAE, Glen Nunn, and Saudi-based Trade and Investment Commissioner, Hassan Miski, would share their valuable insights on the UAE and Saudi Arabia.
He said in 2006-07 Queensland exported $191.7 million worth of merchandise goods to the UAE, an increase of 62 per cent over the previous year, while exports to Saudi Arabia topped $69.8 million.
“Opportunities abound in construction and infrastructure-related services, landscaping, marine, tourism, food and agribusiness, education and vocational training in the Middle East,” Mr Mickel said.
Commissioners will outline major project opportunities and activities in the Middle East including a mission to the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia in November and December 2007.
This mission will coincide with the BIG5 Trade Show in Dubai - the largest and most influential trade show for the construction and contracting industries in the Middle East region. Companies such as DesignInc have benefited from participating in this mission in past years by realising major contracts in Oman and Dubai, worth in excess of $5 million.
Mr Mickel said the seminar is part of the annual Export Week, which recognises the important contribution of the exporting sector in Queensland to the State’s economic development and prosperity.
