Minister for Transport, Trade, Employment and Industrial Relations
The Honourable John Mickel
MACKAY manufacturers and businesses will have the opportunity to meet trade experts and learn more about expanding their international export base, Minister for Trade John Mickel said today.
“Queensland Government trade specialists will share their knowledge of the markets in fast-growing Asia, including China and Indonesia,” Mr Mickel said.
Queensland Trade and Investment Commissioner to China, Shanghai-based, Mr Zijian Zhang, and Jakarta-based Trade and Investment Commissioner, Mr Tony Mitchener, will visit Mackay as part of Export Week.
Mr Mickel said the Trade and Investment Commissioners would share their valuable insights on current developments in these markets.
“In 2006-07 Queensland exported $2.7 billion worth of merchandise goods to China, while exports to Indonesia topped $825.9 million,” he said.
“Opportunities abound in mining services and equipment, planning and design, water treatment, education and training services, and marine and infrastructure projects.”
Commissioner Zhang will also brief Mackay companies participating in the Queensland Government led mining trade mission to the China Coal 2007 trade show next month.
Thirty four delegates will participate in the trade mission, including local companies Anderson Industries, Longwall and Associate, JSIS Engineering and Coalface Training International.
This mission has been coordinated annually for the past five years with the 2006 mission participants securing more than $50 million in export deals.
Mr Mickel said the regional visits are also an important opportunity to showcase the capacity of regional industries, which will further assist the Commissioners in developing export market opportunities for Queensland companies.
The Trade Commissioners’ visit is part of the annual Export Week, which recognises the important contribution of the exporting sector in Queensland to the State’s economic development and prosperity, the Minister said.
