Minister for Transport, Trade, Employment and Industrial Relations
The Honourable John Mickel

HERVEY Bay and Maryborough businesses will have an opportunity to meet trade experts and learn more about expanding their international export base, Minister for Trade John Mickel said today.

“Queensland Government trade specialists will share their knowledge of the markets in South Korea, with companies attending the South Korea Export Seminar,” he said.

Mr Mickel said Queensland Trade and Investment Commissioner in Seoul, Matthew Kang, would share his invaluable insights on opportunities in South Korea, highlighting the market potential for Queensland exporters.

He said Queensland in 2006-2007 exported $3.9 billion worth of merchandise goods to South Korea, Queensland’s second-largest export market.

“Opportunities abound in agribusiness, food, education, biotechnology, ICT, manufacturing, and building materials in Korea,” he said.

Mr Mickel said the seminar is part of the annual Export Week, which recognises the important contribution of the exporting sector in Queensland to the State’s economic development and prosperity.

Commissioner Kang will also outline future Queensland Government activities in South Korea including the planned trade mission to Japan and Korea in May 2008. The mission will coincide with the Korea International Boat Show and will provide Queensland companies with an opportunity to exhibit their products and meet potential distributors.

Increasing disposable income and leisure time, as well as an emerging marine sector in Korea has opened up business opportunities for Queensland companies in marina design, sales of small recreational boats, motor cruisers, yacht academy training and management.
