Minister for Transport, Trade, Employment and Industrial Relations
The Honourable John Mickel

GOLD Coast manufacturers and businesses will have an opportunity to meet trade experts and learn more about expanding their international export base, Minister for Trade John Mickel said today.

“Queensland Government trade specialists will share their knowledge of the markets in North Asia, including Japan and South Korea, with companies attending the briefing,” he said.

Mr Mickel said Queensland Trade and Investment Commissioner in Japan, Mr Takeshi Adachi, and Seoul-based Trade and Investment Commissioner, Mr Matthew Kang, would share their invaluable insights on the North Asian countries, highlighting the market potential of Japan and South Korea.

He said Queensland in 2006-2007 exported $9.2 billion worth of merchandise goods to Japan – Queensland’s largest goods export market – while exports to South Korea, Queensland’ second largest goods destination, topped $1.3 billion.

“Increasing disposable income and leisure time, as well as an emerging marine sector in Korea has opened up business opportunities for Queensland companies in marina design, sales of small recreational boats, motor cruisers, yacht academy training and management,” Mr Mickel said.

Upcoming activities in the marine sector in Japan and Korea targeted by the Trade Queensland offices include the Japan International Boat Show in March 2008 and the Korea International Boat Show in May 2008 which will provide Queensland companies with an opportunity to exhibit their products and meet potential distributors.

Mr Mickel said the briefing is part of the annual Export Week, which recognises the important contribution of the exporting sector in Queensland to the State’s economic development and prosperity.
