Queensland will soon get its “15 minutes of fame” with more than 300 Andy Warhol works to feature in an exclusive exhibition at the Gallery of Modern Art (GoMA) in Brisbane.

Premier Anna Bligh officially launched the Andy Warhol program and campaign at GoMA today, saying the exhibition was a major coup for GoMA and for Queensland.

“This is Australia’s first major retrospective of Andy Warhol’s works from the 1950s until his death in 1987,” Ms Bligh said.

“The exhibition will run from December 8 to March 30 as part of the redeveloped Cultural Centre’s first birthday celebrations.

“Andy Warhol, a pop culture icon, was one of the world’s most influential late 20th century artists and this will be a once in a lifetime opportunity to see the extraordinary breadth of his career.

“The exhibition will feature his paintings, drawings, prints, sculptures, photographs, films and installation works.”

The Premier said the exhibition had secured more than $1.5 million in sponsorship, with Queensland Events Corporation and Santos as principal partners.

Arts Minister Rod Welford said many of Warhol’s iconic works would be on display during the three-month exhibition, including his famous portraits of Marilyn Monroe, Elvis and Mao Zedong.

“Also featured in the exhibition will be Warhol’s self-portraits, the Campbell soup cans, paintings from his ‘Death in America’ series, time capsules, episodes from his TV show, films and videos and issues of Interview magazine.

“This exhibition will contribute to Queensland’s profile as a significant cultural event destination.

“Programming includes symposium; catalogue; a major survey of Warhol’s films at the Australian Cinémathèque; The Silver Factory: Andy Warhol for Kids at the Children’s Art Centre; Friday night openings; and education programs.”

Queensland Art Gallery Director Tony Ellwood said the exhibition was the result of a strong collaborative partnership between the Gallery and The Andy Warhol Museum, one of the four Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh.

“Andy Warhol includes the largest loan from The Andy Warhol Museum, the National Gallery of Australia’s Warhol holdings, plus loans from the National Gallery of Victoria, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo and private collectors,” Mr Ellwood said.
