Minister for Transport, Trade, Employment and Industrial Relations
The Honourable John Mickel
The state government has begun planning Varsity Station Village, a transit-oriented community surrounding the future Varsity Lakes train station at the Gold Coast.
Transport Minister John Mickel said the village project would be the first of its type in Queensland.
"Queensland Transport last year bought land adjacent to the future rail station site to demonstrate what is meant by a transit-oriented development," Mr Mickel said.
"It'll be a place where the community lives, works and plays around the new transit hub at Varsity Lakes.
"Land previously earmarked for industrial activities will become a 14-hectare urban village integrating housing, shops and office buildings with access to the public transport network.
"New community meeting spaces and parkland will also be provided within the village for the area's emerging population.
"The train line extension from Robina to Varsity Lakes has started and the new Varsity Station Village design will ensure everyone has easy access to the station."
The station is due to open in 2010.
Preliminary rail corridor earthworks are underway adjacent to the village site.
Queensland Transport will distribute newsletters to residents in the area this week explaining the transport hub and its integration with the village.
Locals will be able to comment on preliminary planning, and their opinions will be considered during development of a draft Master Plan, due to be released for further public comment in the middle of next year.
