The Honourable John Mickel

Young homeless people in Brisbane’s inner city will soon get a helping hand under a State Government skilling project.

Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations John Mickel and Minister for Education and Training Rod Welford jointly released details of the Beyond Crisis project, which will target up to 250 of the most disadvantaged of Brisbane’s young people over the next three years.

“The homeless city dwellers will undertake self-esteem building and jobsearch activities before vocational training is provided by Brisbane North Institute of TAFE,” Mr Welford said.

“The training will initially involve workplace access and literacy and numeracy and will be followed by short courses in skills shortage areas such as transport and distribution, retail and hospitality.”

Mr Mickel said the Beyond Crisis project would be delivered by an integrated team led by the Australian Red Cross and TAFE Queensland also including Brisbane City Council Youth Team and Edmund Rice Education Flexible Learning Centres staff.

“Homeless young people are disconnected from their communities, education, training and employment and are at great risk of remaining this way without intervention,” Mr Mickel said.

The project is funded by a $193,600 Skilling Queenslanders for Work grant and a Department of Education, Training and the Arts contribution of more than $208,000.

Australian Red Cross Society Training and Employment Manager Peter Harlow said the project’s first six months would involve providing the young homeless with meals and crisis accommodation and encouraging reengagement in the community.

“In the first year, we hope to provide customised assistance to 45 vulnerable young people,” Mr Harlow said.

“We will offer a flexible and holistic program which will result in outcomes for participants in employment, training and, most importantly, personal well being.”

The Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative together with its predecessor the Breaking the Unemployment Cycle initiative have helped create more than 124,000 jobs for Queenslanders since 1998.

Skilling Queenslanders for Work is part of the State Government’s $1 billion Queensland Skills Plan which aims to provide individuals and industry with the
skills and workforce for the 21st Century.
