The Honourable Neil Roberts

State Emergency Services (SES) volunteers across Queensland will have 10 new boats for search and rescue and supply operations during flooding and inland waterway emergencies.

Emergency Services Minister Neil Roberts said the new 4.75 metre Jabiru V-nose punts came complete with trailer, safety equipment and motor. Total cost of the boats was $287,000.

“The new boats will boost SES resources in Redcliffe, Richmond, Clifton, Goondiwindi, Thallon, Miriam Vale, Mackay, Blackall, Logan East and Logan Village over the next four weeks,” Mr Roberts said.

“Each vessel costs $28,700 and it is an important investment by the Government on behalf of the local SES.”

“Rescue boats form a vital part of our response capability during flooding and inland waterway emergencies.”

“The new boats have been deemed suitable for safe operations in a range of conditions including flooded areas, inland streams and dams and coastal areas.”

The boat purchase by the Queensland Government was part of its annual floodboat program which provides new equipment for SES groups.

“Currently the SES has a fleet of over 200 boats which are primarily used for search and rescue and supply operations,” Mr Roberts said.

“This is an important investment in these communities which rely on local SES groups to be properly equipped to respond in times of need.”

“These boats are often the only way to work in an areas affected by flooding as we have seen with the recent flooding in Noosa.”

A delegation of Queensland SES members and staff travelled to New South Wales earlier this year to asses the suitability of the vessel for use in Queensland conditions.
