Attorney-General and Minister for Justice and Minister Assisting the Premier in Western Queensland
The Honourable Kerry Shine
The new Justice appointed to the Supreme Court, Duncan McMeekin, was officially sworn in to the position today.
Attorney-General Kerry Shine, who addressed the Court at the swearing in ceremony in the Brisbane Supreme Court, congratulated Justice McMeekin on his appointment.
“Justice McMeekin has had a distinguished career as a Barrister over the last 30 years working in Rockhampton and Brisbane,” Mr Shine said.
“His areas of practice have included criminal, family and civil law, recently concentrating on civil law, principally personal injury, commercial and insurance law.
“He will work in Brisbane until the end of the year before taking up his appointment as Central Judge based in Rockhampton in January.”
Mr Shine said Justice McMeekin’s appointment as Central Judge will, in many ways, be a “homecoming”.
“Justice McMeekin practised in central Queensland from 1977 until 2002 and during his time there was heavily involved in the community.”
“He was Chairman and Trustee of the Rockhampton Girls’ Grammar School, a trustee of the Rockhampton Art Gallery, Chairman and member of the Rockhampton and Districts Rugby Union judicial committee, and a Vice-Chairman and committee member of The Rockhampton Club.
“He has also served as a Country Member on the Committee of the Bar Association of Queensland,” Mr Shine said.
Justice McMeekin obtained Bachelor of Economics and Bachelor of Laws (Honours) degrees from the University of Queensland.
The Central Judge is based in Rockhampton and is responsible for circuit courts in Mackay, Bundaberg and Longreach and sits on the Queensland Court of Appeal each year.
