The Honourable John Mickel

The Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative is funding CADET Training and Employment to assist 110 unemployed Caloundra people.

Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations John Mickel said the Back to Work project will give people the skills to find a job.

“The initiative has provided $367,300 for the project and it offers 100 participants a mix of job preparation and accredited training. Another 10 will complete paid work placements with Caloundra City Council,” Mr Mickel said.

“With unemployment at a 30-year low of 3.6 per cent in Queensland, these projects can be tailored to provide unemployed people with the assistance they need to find meaningful employment in their area.

“With the current economic boom Queensland needs all the workers it can get but employers need people with suitable skills. The Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative provides the assistance for people to get into these jobs.”

CADET Sunshine Coast Training Manager Glenn Smith said Back to Work targets young unemployed people and parents and carers looking to return to work.

“Thirty young people from the Caloundra hinterland will receive accredited training suited to the in demand retail and hospitality sectors. Another 10 will gain experience in cabinet making, construction and labouring through paid work placements with the council,” Mr Smith said.

“This year we are assisting 70 parents and carers from Noosa, Maroochydore and Caloundra by providing job preparation and accreditation training. This course includes vocational training in horticulture, hospitality and computers.

“We will also be running the course for another 70 parents and carers next year too.”

The Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative together with its predecessor the Breaking the Unemployment Cycle initiative have helped create more than 124,000 jobs for Queenslanders since 1998.

Skilling Queenslanders for Work is part of the State Government’s $1 billion Queensland Skills Plan which aims to provide individuals and industry with the skills and workforce for the 21st Century.
