The Honourable Desley Boyle

Bundaberg tourism identity Dellarose Baevski has been recognised by the world’s leading travel magazine, Travel + Leisure for innovation in developing an ecologically sustainable destination, Tourism Minister Desley Boyle announced.

The Australian edition named Mrs Baevski as one of two Queenslanders and 20 Australian individuals/partnerships to receive 2007 T+L Travel Innovators Awards in the magazine’s second anniversary issue.

Ms Boyle said the prestigious awards acknowledged Australians with the vision, flair and dedication to improve the travel experience for the increasingly discerning traveller.

“Developing an environmentally sustainable resort is one thing, but developing a complete eco-friendly destination is on an entirely different scale,” Ms Boyle said.

“But that is exactly the task Mrs Baevski and her husband, Michael, have set themselves with Sunrise at 1770 – a completely environmentally sustainable coastal community.

“Covering 620 hectares of pristine forestry, wetlands and beaches near Agnes Water, the development encompasses residential areas, an eco-tourism village and six star resort.”

Ms Boyle said the other Queensland winners were Judy and Don Freeman of Cairns, recognised for advancing Indigenous tourism.

“Tourism innovators such as these are vital to the sustainability of our tourism industry.

“The State Government is dedicated to securing the economic, environmental and social sustainability of the State’s tourism industry.

“Last year we launched a $48 million, ten-year Queensland Tourism Strategy through which the Queensland Government and Tourism Queensland will continue to invest in programs to support a healthy tourism future in Queensland.

“But we can not do it without industry pioneers. I congratulate and offer my sincere thanks to Judy and Don Freeman and Dellarose Baevski for their excellent achievements.”

Travel + Leisure Australia is the world's leading travel magazine, with eight international editions, including the US, China, India and Australia.

The full, six-page Innovators Awards feature is published in the October edition of Travel + Leisure Australia.
