Premier Anna Bligh has urged voters to put Queensland first when they cast their ballots at the upcoming Federal election.

With both the potential Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and Treasurer Wayne Swan being based in Queensland, she said the election offered an unprecedented opportunity to elect a Federal Government that understood our state.

“In the 10 months since he has been Opposition Leader, Kevin Rudd has shown that he is prepared to roll up his sleeves to make things happen for Queensland. He knows what makes Queensland tick,” Ms Bligh said.

“For the past 11 years we have been neglected by the Federal Government despite being the fastest-growing state in the nation and the economic powerhouse that creates 40% of new jobs in Australia.

“It’s time to shift the political centre of gravity to where the action is. It’s been 100 years since we had a Queenslander elected as Prime Minister and it’s time to vote for our future.

“With all of the opportunities in front of us, it has never been more critical that we have a Federal Government with fresh ideas on how to ensure this prosperity benefits all Queenslanders.

Ms Bligh said Mr Rudd had “put his money where his mouth is” and vowed to help the Queensland Government build vital infrastructure across the state.

“Mr Rudd’s priorities on issues such as water, education, traffic and roads underline that he will lead a Federal Government that will keep us one step ahead of growth.

“He has promised funding for the Kessels Rd/Main Road intersection in Brisbane to help us deal with congestion. He’s committed funds to the new port access road to Townsville and for the new northern section of the Gateway Bridge.

“Mr Rudd will continue working with us on south-east Queensland’s water grid and was quick off the mark to offer his full support. It was his early pledge of $408 million for the Western Corridor scheme that shamed John Howard into eventually following suit.

“In a state the size of Queensland, his broadband roll-out will bring everyday life into the 21st century and help us to keep pace with the rest of the world.”

Ms Bligh said Queensland had seen little of John Howard over the past 11 years.

“In the past weeks, the money has finally started to flow after 11 years of neglect. Queenslanders won’t fall for that,” she said.
