Minister for Transport, Trade, Employment and Industrial Relations
The Honourable John Mickel

Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations and Member for Logan John Mickel today met with leaders and members of local African communities to discuss the challenges and opportunities they face in the employment market.

“Over 1,500 Africans are now living in the Brisbane South region playing an integral role in our local cultural diversity,” Mr Mickel said.

Minister Mickel met with leaders of the African communities at ACCES Services which has been running state-government funded skilling projects since 2001.

“African migrants and refugees face unique challenges upon arrival in Queensland and we are committed to helping ease this pressure,” he said

“One of the most concrete ways any government can help new Australians is to dedicate funds to accredited training, literacy support and paid work placements which ease the path to sustainable work,” he said.

“In times of unprecedented low unemployment our focus is now to empower disadvantaged groups with the skills and confidence to actively contribute to their local communities.”

“Since 2001, we have dedicated $4.2 million to ACCES Services alone to run skilling projects that offer newly arrived migrants and refugees the best chance of broadening their horizons and moving toward brighter futures.”

“This has resulted in 1065 people getting jobs – a fantastic result.”

ACCES Services Inc Assistant Director Daniel Zingifuaboro said over 2,000 local Africans have taken part in ACCES-run Skilling Queenslanders for Work projects since 2001.

“We focus on understanding the challenges facing the African community and offering projects tailored to helping people overcome them,” Mr Zingifuaboro said.

“Through understanding the needs of both project participants and local employers we aim for a win-win situation for everyone.”

The Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative together with its predecessor the Breaking the Unemployment Cycle initiative have helped create more than 124,000 jobs for Queenslanders since 1998.

Skilling Queenslanders for Work is part of the State Government’s $1 billion Queensland Skills Plan which aims to provide individuals and industry with the skills and workforce for the 21st Century.
