Gold Coast motorists can look forward to saving at least five minutes after the completion of the $42 million Nerang-Broadbeach Road upgrade five months ahead of schedule.

Member for Mudgeeraba Di Reilly, representing Main Roads Minister Warren Pitt, officially commissions the 4.48km, four-lane upgrade today.

"With about 20,000 vehicles a day, Nerang-Broadbeach Road is one of the busiest east-west arterials on the Gold Coast," Mr Pitt said.

"This project will deliver significant travel time reductions and also improve safety, with the realignment at Robina Parkway and the upgrade of numerous intersections.

"Work on the first stage, the Nielsens Road intersection, began in 2001 and completion this week of the final section, between Boulton Road and Nielsens Road, is the final piece of the puzzle."

Nerang-Broadbeach Road is now better equipped to cope with heavy rain or flooding, as well as traffic for major events at Carrara Stadium.

"The median of the upgraded road is, in effect, a large spoon drain," Ms Reilly said.

"Even in the heaviest rain, Nerang-Broadbeach Road should remain passable for traffic – in the past it has often been one of the first roads to flood.

"The upgrade is also good news for AFL fans, with the Kangaroos to play as many as eight games at Carrara in the next two years.

"AFL is growing in popularity and the Queensland Government's commitment to encouraging the sport and the use of Carrara Stadium will be further enhanced with improved traffic flow along Nerang-Broadbeach Road."
