Minister for Mines and Energy
The Honourable Geoff Wilson

Mines and Energy Minister Geoff Wilson has praised the efforts of Energex and Ergon Energy workers for the way in which they responded to a series of severe storms that struck south east Queensland this week.

Minister Wilson said Energex and Ergon crews had worked around the clock to restore power to homes and businesses after thunderstorms, strong winds and hail swept across the region.

“Hundreds of staff working in the field, at control centres and contact centres, as well as support staff, have been on the job since Sunday,” Mr Wilson said.

“Energex crews on the Sunshine Coast and the Gold Coast supported their co-workers in Brisbane’s northern suburbs – one of the hardest hit areas,” he said.

“The main cause of the power interruptions has been the tens of thousands of lightning strikes between northern New South Wales and Wide Bay, which only goes to show it’s not going to be a matter of if we lose power this summer, but when.

“The response from Ergon Energy and Energex this week has been truly commendable. They were ready for action, and as a result, had power restored to homes and businesses as quickly as possible.

“It’s a hazardous job, and not nine to five. They put in a mighty effort this week, battling bad weather to restore power to homes and businesses, and for that we owe them a debt of gratitude,” Mr Wilson said.
