State funding to address Queensland shoreline erosion issues

Redcliffe City Council will develop a shoreline erosion management plan to address local coastal erosion threats.

Local Government Minister Warren Pitt today announced $37,500 in State funding towards the project under the Shoreline Erosion Management Planning Scheme.

“Shoreline erosion is an ongoing threat to many coastal communities and it’s important for councils to plan effectively to mitigate threats to our beaches and coastal infrastructure,” Mr Pitt said.

Member for Redcliffe Lillian van Litsenburg welcomed the funding.

“Effective planning for shoreline erosion control can be difficult and is expensive for small local governments,” Ms van Litsenburg said.

“That is why the State Government has shown its support for the management of our coastal areas by providing a $1million Shoreline Erosion Management Planning Scheme to assist councils.

“The State Government will contribute 50per cent of the total cost of $75,000 for the project, with the remaining funds to be contributed by Redcliffe City Council,” she said.

Ms van Litsenburg said Redcliffe City Council would develop a sustainable and cost effective strategy to address long-term erosion threats to local beaches.

“The project will involve combining existing data and consulting with stakeholders to assist with future planning decisions.

“These are innovative projects that have real potential to protect and benefit our unique natural environment in Queensland,” she said.

“This is yet another example of how the Queensland Government is working with councils to help improve environmental outcomes across the state.”
