Minister for Main Roads and Local Government
The Honourable Warren Pitt

Hervey Bay City Council will develop a shoreline erosion management plan to address local coastal erosion threats.

Local Government Minister Warren Pitt today announced $24,000 in state funding towards the project under the Shoreline Erosion Management Planning Scheme.

“Shoreline erosion is an ongoing threat to many coastal communities and it’s important for councils to plan effectively to mitigate threats to our beaches and coastal infrastructure,” Mr Pitt said.

Member for Hervey Bay Andrew McNamara welcomed the funding.

“Effective planning for shoreline erosion control can be difficult and expensive and may be beyond the capabilities of some local governments,” Mr McNamara said.

“That is why the State Government has shown its support for the management of our coastal areas by providing a $1million Shoreline Erosion Management Planning Scheme to assist councils.

“The State Government will contribute 50per cent of the total cost of $48,000 for the project, with the remaining funds to be contributed by Hervey Bay City Council,” he said.

Mr McNamara said that while Hervey Bay City Council had previously investigated erosion at key sites, the development of a long-term strategy would ensure a sustainable and cost effective management of erosion at local beaches.

“These are innovative projects that have real potential to protect and benefit our unique natural environment in Queensland,” he said.

“This is yet another example of how the Queensland Government is working with councils to help improve environmental outcomes across the state.”
