Queensland maintains national lead with unemployment at historic low: Fraser

The Bee Gees ruled the local music charts and Guillermo Vilas had just won the Australian open the last time Queensland experienced such historic low unemployment as today’s September job figures show.

Treasurer Andrew Fraser said the unemployment figure had remained steady at a revised 3.6 per cent – the lowest rate since the start of the monthly labour force survey in 1978.

Mr Fraser said Queensland’s unemployment rate compared to the national rate, which remains unchanged at a revised 4.2 per cent.

“We have now had an unemployment rate below the national average for 39 months – more than three years,” Mr Fraser said.

“This is a magnificent result for the state which is now considered throughout the country as the nation builder.”

Mr Fraser said Queensland created 68,700 jobs in the last year and 2,200 jobs in September.

“We continue to punch above our weight in job creation, with 25 per cent of all jobs in the nation.”

The ABS revised previously published figures in their latest monthly release.
