Attorney-General and Minister for Justice Kerry Shine has instructed the Director of Public Prosecutions to appeal the District Court sentence handed to Shakeel Mirza.

An order of 12 months probation but with no conviction to be recorded was made after he pleaded guilty to a charge of attempted indecent treatment of a child under 12.

“I have reviewed the transcript of the sentencing remarks and received a thorough advice from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions dealing with comparable cases and the chances of success on appeal,” Mr Shine said.

“The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions has recommended I appeal this sentence and in the light of this advice and what I have read, I have instructed the DPP to appeal.”
