Minister for Main Roads and Local Government
The Honourable Warren Pitt
Woodford State School will start the 2008 school year with a new 40km/h zone on the neighbouring D'Aguilar Highway, Main Roads Minister Warren Pitt announced today.
Mr Pitt said the reduction in the speed limit from 60km/h during school start and finish times showed Main Roads' commitment to listening to the local community.
Under normal guidelines used to determine school speed limits, Woodford State School, which is separated from the highway by a service road, did not automatically qualify for a 40km/h zone.
"Main Roads is receptive to community feedback and in this case, the community's clear wish was for the speed limit to be reduced near the school," Mr Pitt said.
"Safety is always a major concern and while the number of pedestrians crossing in front of the school is static, there has been a significant increase in the volume of traffic on the highway. Reducing the speed limit will greatly improve safety at the school site."
Main Roads undertook a detailed study of the site before determining the 40km/h zone was the most appropriate measure.
"The department considered various options, including a zebra crossing, and I am confident the reduced speed limit is the safest option available," Mr Pitt said.
"No-standing signs will be installed on the D'Aguilar Highway and parents are encouraged to drop their children off using the service road. This will also ensure a clearer view of traffic for people crossing the highway.
"Main Roads' decision to reduce the speed limit on this section of road was endorsed by the Caboolture Shire Speed Management Committee, which includes representatives from local government, Queensland Transport and the Queensland Police Service."
The 40km/h zone will operate between 8am and 9am and 2.30pm and 3.30pm, Monday to Friday.
