Minister for Communities, Disability Services, ATSIP, Multicultural Affairs, Seniors and Youth
The Honourable Lindy Nelson-Carr
As they say in Fiji, Ni Sa Bula Vinaka mai!
And Multicultural Affairs Minister Lindy Nelson-Carr marked National Fiji Day today (October 10) by welcoming Queenslanders to get out and celebrate our Smart State’s rich cultural diversity.
“The Fijian welcome is a near equivalent to 'G’day mate' and I’m delighted some of our talented Fijian performers are highlights on the program at this weekend’s Multicultural Festival,” Ms Nelson-Carr said.
“I want as many Queenslanders as possible to experience and share our rich cultural diversity because it’s such an important feature of modern Queensland, we should all be proud of it,” she said.
“That’s what this Sunday’s activities are all about – sharing our talents, promoting tolerance, understanding and celebrating multiculturalism.”
This will be the 4th annual Queensland Multicultural Festival which has to date attracted a total of some 120,000 since its inception in 2004.
The free festival was developed by the Queensland Government to highlight the importance and values of cultural diversity.
As well as the main event, the Minister said festival attractions included a youth rock concert this Saturday night.
“Uppin’ the Amphi at Roma Street Amphitheatre Saturday night is a new component of this year’s festival, with headliners including Brisbane art-rock combo The Red Paintings, five multi-national acts and a DJ,” she said.
“There’s also more performances of Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing in coming weeks at the parklands.”
Lead-up events included the Queensland Roar Football Club match and the multicultural film festival last week.
Highlight's this Sunday include:
• Spectacular Spanish dancer Yolanda Fernandez (has performed for the King of Spain) and dance group Oye Ritmo
• The Premier’s Multicultural Photographic Award exhibition of award winners from 2004 to 2006.
• Bobby Flynn, Deborah Conway and Willy Zygier – headline acts on the main stages
• The Caravan procession – an extravaganza presenting the colour, pizzazz and bohemian flamboyance of Gypsy music.
• Family Festival – with join-in dance and martial arts performances, face painting, lion dances and martial arts displays plus free workshops.
• QUT Community Dance Stage – traditional and contemporary dance from India, Sierra Leone, Croatia, Poland, Spain, Cook Islands and Burma
• Zambiacongo Capoeira Group – displaying non-combative Brazilian martial art forms in roving performances throughout the day
• Diverse Deli – more than 35 International food stalls and cafes scattered through the Parkland.
