Minister for Transport, Trade, Employment and Industrial Relations
The Honourable John Mickel
Forty-eight young jobseekers in Deception Bay will learn new skills and gain experience to give them a better chance of finding jobs thanks to a new employment project.
Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations John Mickel and Member for Murrumba Dean Wells said BoysTown received a $313,470 grant from the Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative to organise the Ready for Work project.
“Thirty young people will complete job preparation tasks and some accredited training,” Mr Mickel said.
“Another 18 participants will complete 20-week paid work placements.
“This is a fantastic opportunity for local young people who are struggling to get a start to receive the assistance they need.”
Member for Murrumba Dean Wells said BoysTown’s experience with youth issues would be very helpful to project participants.
“Youth unemployment is significantly higher than the rest of the population and for each young person there can be a number of different reasons that they can’t find and hold a job,” Mr Wells said.
“With the state’s unemployment rate at a 30-year low of 3.5 per cent and employers looking for staff there are some great opportunities for young people to turn things around.
“To do that they need the right skills and attitude and this project will help the participants develop those attributes.”
BoysTown Operations Manager Brendan Bourke said the job preparation will include a variety of training and qualifications.
“After four weeks each participant will have completed training and earned a construction blue card, a Positive Notice Blue Card for Child Related Employment and a Certificate I in Skills for the Future,” Mr Bourke said.
“We have planned for two groups of nine for the work placements and the jobs they will be doing will help us and the local community.
“The two projects will involve improvement works to community facilities and infrastructure in the Deception Bay area.
“Both projects will give participants a mix of construction and landscaping experience which will be very helpful when they apply for jobs.”
The Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative together with its predecessor the Breaking the Unemployment Cycle initiative have helped create more than 124,000 jobs for Queenslanders since 1998.
Skilling Queenslanders for Work is part of the State Government’s $1 billion Queensland Skills Plan which aims to provide individuals and industry with the skills and workforce for the 21st Century.
