The Honourable Anna Bligh
A new three-storey classroom block and library will be built at the Wilston State School in a $3.7million package to cater for growing enrolments, Premier Anna Bligh said today.
Ms Bligh said the new buildings were part of the $445 million the State Government would spend this year modernising, expanding and building new schools across Queensland.
The project will include eight new classrooms for senior primary students and the library, which will comprise a junior fiction learning area, a computer laboratory, an IT workshop, and audio/visual recording facilities.
It will be built on the site of the school’s current tennis courts, which will be relocated and upgraded to the latest standards.
“The project is currently in the planning phase with construction set to start early next year, and the classrooms should be completed by the start of fourth term in 2008," Ms Bligh said.
"It's great news for the school community and will cater for growth at the Wilston State School for the next decade. Similar demand is being felt across the inner-city as more young families move back to the area because of the tremendous urban renewal that is taking place.
"In a broader sense, investing in the early years of children's education is critical to their later success and this is a priority for my Government. We are dedicated to providing all Queensland students with modern facilities to encourage learning and to help them reach their potential.”
Education and Training Minister Rod Welford said the project was designed to cater for expected growth in Brisbane’s inner-north.
“Wilston State School currently has about 800 students and enrolments could grow to about 900 by 2017,” Mr Welford said.
“Providing the best possible learning environments and educational opportunities for young Queenslanders is a cornerstone of our Smart State philosophy.
"Our Government is committed to building contemporary education facilities that equip students for the challenges of the 21st century and inspire them to learn.
"A smarter future requires smarter facilities for learning - and that's what Wilston State School is getting."
