The Honourable John Mickel

Noosa’s unemployed will be skilled up to cater for shortages in the region’s booming hospitality industry, thanks to a $135,750 Skilling Queenslanders for Work grant.

Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations John Mickel said the
Smorgasbord of Skills Opportunities project, delivered by the Noosa Community Training Centre, had wide ranging benefits across the community.

“The project gives 140 unemployed locals the ability to break into hospitality and other in-demand local industries and it also provides businesses with a pool of job-ready prospective employees to dip into,” Mr Mickel said.

“One hundred long-term unemployed who are ineligible for the Job Network will get job preparation assistance and non-accredited training using a case-management model (combination of one-to-one assistance and structured training).

“The other 40 places will be devoted to unemployed 17-24 year olds who, in addition to job preparation assistance, will put in approximately 100 hours of accredited training from Certificates I and II in Hospitality (Operations).

“Queensland’s booming economy has helped us achieve the lowest unemployment rate in 30 years.

“Projects like this under the Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative are helping give people the skills they need to participate meaningfully in the workforce.”

Noosa Community Training Centre manager Glenda Lane said there would be no shortage of work in the industry in coming years.

“Tourism is one of Noosa’s main economic drivers so there’s a constant need for people trained in food, hospitality and personal services,” Ms Lane said.

“With the number of visitors expected to increase in the next 10 years, the number of jobs in hospitality, retail and customer service industries will increase.”

The Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative together with its predecessor the Breaking the Unemployment Cycle initiative have helped create more than
124,000 jobs for Queenslanders since 1998.

Skilling Queenslanders for Work is part of the State Government’s $1 billion Queensland Skills Plan which aims to provide individuals and industry with the skills and workforce for the 21st Century.
