The Honourable John Mickel

Cooloola, Gympie and South Burnett’s under-unemployed are set to boost employment ranks, thanks to $110,000 Skilling Queenslanders for Work grant.

Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations John Mickel said a significant number of the region’s unemployed residents were ineligible for assistance through the Federal Government’s Job Network, due primarily to the current drought.

“Many people’s incomes have been affected because of the drought and other factors within the region but they are unable to receive income assistance because of family assets, spousal income or other reasons,” Mr Mickel said.

“This project will give 100 disadvantaged residents job preparation assistance ensuring they have the skills and confidence to get a suitable job.

“The Wide Bay-Burnett region has the lowest workforce participation rate in Queensland.

“Projects like this under the Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative give under-skilled people a much better chance of finding meaningful work.”

The South Burnett Community Training Centre will deliver the 49-week project with
six months’ intensive post-participation, post-training and post-placement support also offered.

Centre coordinator Janet Champney said participants would receive individually tailored case management support to help them step into the workforce.

“Local employers continually identify a lack of quality applicants,” Ms Champney said.

“If they have a poor resume or presentation it immediately halts their progression in the employment process.

“In many cases there are suitable people available but their potential has not been realised.”

The Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative together with its predecessor the Breaking the Unemployment Cycle initiative have helped create more than
124,000 jobs for Queenslanders since 1998.

Skilling Queenslanders for Work is part of the State Government’s $1 billion Queensland Skills Plan which aims to provide individuals and industry with the
skills and workforce for the 21st Century.
