Young maestros at New Farm State School, in Brisbane’s inner city, have scored top marks in a national competition for budding music makers.

Minister for Education, Training and the Arts Rod Welford, congratulated the school after it was named the winner of the ABC Classic FM Flame Award for music education.

“This competition showcases the most outstanding music programs in Australian schools, so I’m absolutely delighted that a Queensland school – New Farm State School – has been awarded this honour,” Mr Welford said.

“This win highlights the wealth of musical talent in Queensland state school students and teachers.

“New Farm State School’s achievement also enhances the reputation of Education Queensland’s music program, which is widely recognised as one of the best in the country.

“The school was nominated for the award by a group of parents who put together a submission explaining how the school’s music program was inclusive, innovative and impactful.

“Their effort underscores the commitment and support for the school’s dedication to music as part of the learning process.”

Mr Welford said Virginia State School was the national winner of the same award in 2005.

“New Farm State School receives a $3000 voucher to spend on musical equipment and $3000 cash,” he said.

“In addition the school will play host to a “word class concert” staged by ABC Classic FM and broadcast live around the country.”

The Flame Awards are run by ABC Classic FM in association with the “Music. Play for Life” campaign.

Entries were shortlisted by a panel of representatives from the Australian Society of Music Education.
