The Honourable Judy Spence

The new Caboolture Police District is now officially operational, with the opening of the new District Office in King Street Caboolture today.

Police Minister Judy Spence joined with Commissioner Bob Atkinson and local members for Glass House, Pumicestone and Kallangur – Carolyn Male, Carryn Sullivan and Ken Heywood – in launching the new district and opening the office, during a ceremony this morning.

“The opening of this office is a significant milestone for the establishment of the new Caboolture Police District,” Ms Spence said.

“The people of this area, with the support of their local members, came to the government asking for an additional stand alone police district and I am pleased to see our commitment to deliver coming to fruition.

“The Caboolture Shire is the fourth fastest growing area in Queensland and tenth in Australia, with a population of 134,820 as at June last year.

“With an annual growth rate twice the national average, this area is going to continue to expand and so it is essential we provide the police numbers, infrastructure and resources necessary to protect and serve the local community.

“To ensure this commitment is met, this government is providing more than $14 Million for the development of the Caboolture Police District – including the $320,000 provided for the fit-out of this new office we are opening today.”

Ms Spence said $11.5 Million is being provided for the purchase of land and construction of a 24-hour police station facility and district headquarters at Burpengary; and $2.5 Million for the upgrade of the Caboolture Police Station and Watchhouse.

“Additionally, police in this area will benefit from the $2 Million planned upgrade of the Bribie Island Police Station and the delivery of the new $800,000 Woodford Police Station,” Ms Spence said.

“These major capital works projects will ensure the growing number of police being established in this new district will have the facilities and resources they need to fight crime and protect the community.”

Ms Male, Ms Sullivan and Mr Hayward all welcomed in the new era of policing in their local areas.

“There is strong community support for further increases in police resources to help reduce crime and tailor policing services to the needs of this area,” Ms Male said.

“The new facilities being developed as part of this district will also provide an increased local police presence on the Bruce Highway and faster response times to traffic matters on the motorway,” Ms Sullivan said.

“This will help our police to address the rapid population growth in the area and ensure the safety of our communities for years to come,” Mr Hayward said.

Commissioner Atkinson said the new district encompasses the communities of Bribie Island, Narangba, Burpengary, Caboolture, Woodford, Kilcoy and Moore.

“District resources will be shared with Redcliffe District, including the Tactical Crime Squad, Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB), Child Protection and Investigation Unit (CPIU), Traffic Branch, Dog Squad and Scenes of Crime to ensure a full policing presence in the district until the Burpengary Policing Complex is completed,” Commissioner Atkinson said.

“Due to considerable public support for more resources in the area, this new district will enable the Service to meet the policing needs of the local community.

“By administering the district locally, policing will focus on local issues and with appropriate planning and a proactive approach will tackle any problems head on.

“Caboolture District policing operations will continue to operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week with Inspector Mike Brady relieving in the role of District Officer until the position is officially appointed.”
