Minister for Police, Corrective Services and Sport
The Honourable Judy Spence
The establishment of a new $4 Million police station at Surfers Paradise is one step closer, with the signing of a lease today for a property in Orchid Avenue, Police Minister Judy Spence has announced.
Ms Spence said Queensland Police and the Department of Public Works have reached an agreement with the landlord, for a 10 year lease on the property in the heart of Surfers Paradise.
“This is great news for the people of Surfers Paradise, who have been eagerly following the progress of this election commitment since we announced it last year,” Ms Spence said.
“The location of the new 24 hour station in Orchid Avenue will place local officers right in the hub of activity in Surfers Paradise, improving their ability to service the community and respond to incidents.
“This strategic position will be much more convenient for police and the community, than the current premises in Ferny Avenue.
“This new building also has more space for the growing number of police we are providing for the Gold Coast and Surfers Paradise in particular.”
Ms Spence said the building in Orchid Avenue will be refurbished to accommodate general duties police from the current Surfers Paradise Police Station, and will include holding cells, clerical support, meals and conference rooms.
“Tenders for the refurbishment are expected to be called by Christmas, to allow for the refurbishment to commence in the early stages of 2008, with a planned completion date before the 2008 Indy 300 event,” Ms Spence said.
“The station will provide police with the perfect staging venue to continue the good work that officers perform on the Gold Coast during major events like the Indy 300, as well as Schoolies Festivities, and New Years Eve Celebrations.
“This project is yet another example of this government's commitment to provide the Queensland Police Service with the necessary facilities to maintain law and order on the Gold Coast.”
