Minister for Police, Corrective Services and Sport
The Honourable Judy Spence
Sport Minister Judy Spence has called on other Australian states to adopt a Queensland campaign which is helping in the fight against obesity.
Ms Spence is promoting the State Government’s Eat Well Be Active campaign at the Sport and Recreation Ministers’ Council in Canberra.
“The Eat Well Be Active campaign has dramatically increased community awareness in Queensland of the benefits of a healthy and active lifestyle," Ms Spence said.
“The Queensland Government has invested over $8.4 million to run the campaign over three years from February 2007 until June 2009.
“Already this campaign has been very successful in delivering the key messages about the benefits of regular physical activity and healthy eating in reducing the risks associated with obesity.
“The Eat Well Be Active campaign promotes messages on how to get more active during our busy lifestyles, for example by replacing some car travel with walking or cycling.
“It also shows parents how to encourage their children and young people to be more active and eat more nutritious foods.”
Ms Spence said the campaign has been promoted through paid advertising, a website and a self-help pack which was sent to every household in Queensland.
“Research has shown there was 52% recognition of the Eat Well Be Active campaign only six weeks after it was launched while 54% of people recalled the campaign’s self-help pack being delivered," Ms Spence said.
“This is a wonderful result given the average recall of direct mail is around 20 to 30%.
“In fact this campaign has been so successful it won the state’s top honour for social marketing in the 2007 Australian Marketing Institute (AMI) Queensland Awards for Marketing Excellence.”
Ms Spence said she’d like to see the Eat Well Be Active campaign adopted in all Australian states to help in the fight against obesity.
“There’s no doubt this campaign has achieved some fantastic results and would deliver similar results in other states,” Ms Spence said.
“I am showing other Ministers how this Queensland campaign has increased community awareness of exercise and healthy eating and I hope my colleagues will consider introducing this campaign in their own states.”
