The Queensland Government has committed a further $121,630 toward helping rural and remote regions of the state cope with the ravages of drought.

Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations John Mickel said Agforce had been awarded further funding through a Skilling Queenslanders for Work grant to continue to employ a full-time Drought Relief Coordinator.

“This is the fourth year we have committed to fund this position which is vital for helping drought affected farmers access the services and support they need,” Mr Mickel said.

“There is no quick-fix for the challenges facing our rural communities but a dedicated coordinator on the ground is a valuable resource for struggling Queenslanders.”

AgForce’s Senior Policy Advisor Rod Johnson said the role will continue to be filled by Rod Saal who has an intimate understanding of the challenges and opportunities for Queensland’s farmers.

“Rod will continue to provide advice and access to government support, help farms with their drought assessments, assist with farm debt mediation, and work with rural workers who are leaving the industry to gain skills in other areas,” Mr Johnson said.

“He will also work on a policy level to contribute to the assessment of drought impact on local labour markets and help prepare reports to analyse regional industry production and anticipated drought impacts.”

The Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative together with its predecessor the Breaking the Unemployment Cycle initiative have helped create more than 124,000 jobs for Queenslanders since 1998.

Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative is part of the State Government’s $1 billion Queensland Skills Plan which aims to provide individuals and industry with the skills and workforce for the 21st Century.
