Minister for Transport, Trade, Employment and Industrial Relations
The Honourable John Mickel

Dalby businesses and other organisations are working with the Queensland Government to train unemployed locals so they can join the workforce.

Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations John Mickel said $166,820 had been allocated under the Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative, to fund the
Dalby @ Work project managed by the Dalby Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

“The project will assist 75 people and get them ready for work in rural, retail and administration or engineering and manufacturing,” Mr Mickel said.

“These are growing industries in the area and the Dalby Chamber of Commerce and Industry, with the support of many local businesses, is looking to get on the front foot and train people with the skills they will need.

“While unemployment is at a 30-year low of 3.5 per cent in Queensland, it is important to remember there are still people out there who are having difficulty finding work.

“Programs like this under the Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative will help give people the skills they need to participate meaningfully in the workforce.”

Dalby Chamber of Commerce and Industry President Paul Hodda said the project would have thee intakes and would start with job readiness training.

“There are some skills that are needed in every workplace, like communication, problem solving and general life skills. After that participants will move into accredited training in one of the three streams,” Mr Hodda said.

“There are a number of new developments in Dalby and we need to make sure anyone who wants to work has the skills to find a job so our economy can continue to grow.”

The Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative together with its predecessor the Breaking the Unemployment Cycle initiative have helped create more than 124,000 jobs for Queenslanders since 1998.

Skilling Queenslanders for Work is part of the State Government’s $1 billion Queensland Skills Plan which aims to provide individuals and industry with the skills and workforce for the 21st Century.
