Minister for Main Roads and Local Government
The Honourable Warren Pitt
Queenslanders have until the end of this week to have their say on the review of legislation governing Queensland’s local councils.
Local Government Minister Warren Pitt said the review of the Local Government Act would ensure Queensland’s new system of local government was supported by up-to-date legislation.
“The Queensland Government is building a more modern and accountable local government system,” Mr Pitt said.
“This is about modernising the system and getting the best possible outcomes for local communities.”
Mr Pitt said the review provided an opportunity to introduce legislation that supported the new system of local government.
“The review will provide a range of benefits including simplifying legislation and recognising the changing needs of local councils,” Mr Pitt said.
“Council roles are changing – they are more focused on infrastructure and human services and now have a regulatory role in planning, public health and environmental management.”
Mr Pitt said feedback was being sought on eight key issues:
• structures and functions of local government
• local government and its place in the wider framework of government
• the roles and powers of councillors and officers
• local government elections
• local laws
• asset, financial and infrastructure management
• performance reporting and compliance
• the role of the department responsible for local government.
Issues papers are available on the local government website – www.lgp.qld.gov.au/lgareview – and submissions can be made online, by email or in hard copy. Submissions close at 5pm this Friday, October 5.
