Minister for Transport, Trade, Employment and Industrial Relations
The Honourable John Mickel

Ninety Logan people struggling to find work will be assisted through a local employment project.

Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations John Mickel and Member for Waterford Evan Moorhead said the Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative is providing the Kingston East Neighbourhood Group with $144,100 to fund the Skilling for Work/Moving Forward project.

“Fifty people will complete modules from a Certificate III in Child Care or Aged Care and the remaining 40 will receive job preparation training,” Mr Mickel said.

“The customised assistance and training this project provides will address many of the problems people experience when looking for work.”

Member for Waterford Evan Moorhead said accredited training, self-confidence, time management and problem solving skills are some of the things employers can look for that this project can provide.

“While unemployment is at a 30-year low of 3.5 per cent in Queensland, it is important to remember there are still people out there who are having difficulty finding work.

“Projects like this under the Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative will help give people the skills they need to participate meaningfully in the workforce,” Mr Moorhead said.

Kingston East Neighbourhood Group Centre Manager Rita Ackermann said the project is targeting parents and carers looking to return to the workforce and young people aged between 17 and 24.

“The job preparation training includes computer literacy and workplace policies and procedures,” Ms Ackermann said.

“The accredited training is nationally recognised and will help local businesses by giving people the skills they need to work in the aged or child care industries.”

The Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative together with its predecessor the Breaking the Unemployment Cycle initiative have helped create more than 124,000 jobs for Queenslanders since 1998.

Skilling Queenslanders for Work is part of the State Government’s $1 billion Queensland Skills Plan which aims to provide individuals and industry with the skills and workforce for the 21st Century.
