High-flying students throughout Queensland are urged to apply for one of eight bursaries to study at Australia’s first aviation-focused state high school in Brisbane next year.

Education and Training Minister Rod Welford said the inaugural Virgin Blue Aviation High Bursary would enable students to launch their career in aviation and aerospace at Aviation High, in Clayfield.

“The bursaries will provide five Year 8 students with $1000 a year for the first three years of their secondary schooling and three Year 11 students will receive $1500 for each of their senior years at high school,” Mr Welford said.

“Aviation High is supporting Queensland’s growing aviation industry by providing high-quality and relevant education and training for students in Years 8-12.

“Students study subjects similar to those offered at other high schools, but with an aviation focus.

“They will be suitably equipped for various careers in the aviation industry – everything from caterers and cabin crew to pilots, meteorologists, aviation lawyers and engineers.

“I congratulate Virgin Blue Airlines for playing an active role in the education of Queensland’s next generation of aviation and aerospace professionals.”

Virgin Blue Airlines chief executive officer Brett Godfrey said the airline was pleased to support Aviation High’s development because it was a Queensland company and a major aviation employer in Australia, particularly in Brisbane.

"At a time when there is a growing demand for specialist professions, including in aerospace and aviation, Aviation High is a forward-thinking initiative,” Mr Godfrey said.

“It is also a unique opportunity for young Australians to gain pre-tertiary specialisation in an exciting industry.”

All Queensland students are eligible to apply for the bursaries. Selection will be made on a range of criteria, including academic achievement. Applications close 19 October 2007.

Virgin Blue Airlines will also provide an award for academic achievement which will be presented to the dux of Aviation High each year.

The recipient will receive return tickets on Virgin Blue to anywhere in Australia, $500 and a framed certificate of academic achievement.
