Minister for Tourism, Regional Development and Industry
The Honourable Desley Boyle

Cairns manufacturers have the chance to discover how they measure up against the best in the world and where they can improve, Regional Development and Industry Minister Desley Boyle says.

Ms Boyle, who is also Member for Cairns, said the Cairns State Development Centre was offering a free Manufacturing Microscope service using a benchmarking model developed by the prestigious London Business School and IBM.

“Manufacturing is an important industry for the Far North and for Queensland,” Ms Boyle said.

“Last year, the manufacturing industry contributed almost $15 billion to the State’s economy and is the single largest source of full-time jobs in Queensland, with over 190,000 employees.”

Ms Boyle urged businesses in the engineering, steel fabrication, aviation, marine, aquaculture and food processing sectors to sign up for the Manufacturing Microscope service.

“The State Development Centre will arrange for an accredited facilitator to sit down with businesses and work through a special questionnaire,” Ms Boyle said.

“Every element of the business is reviewed, from product development, engineering and business systems to the organisational culture.

“From the questionnaire, the facilitator will evaluate the business and provide a critical and useful report that identifies the company’s operational strengths and the areas where it could improve,” she said.

Hinterland Aero Engineering managing director Scott Griffin said the Manufacturing Microscope service was of great benefit to his business.

“The program provided tremendous clarity about where we were actually positioned against where we thought we were,” Mr Griffin said.

“It was the first step in the continual process of product improvement.”
