Minister for Health
The Honourable Stephen Robertson
Premier Anna Bligh announced today that Abigroup Contractors Pty Limited had been appointed to the design team for the new Queensland Children’s Hospital.
“Queensland needs a single children’s hospital to ensure sick children receive the best possible care,” Ms Bligh said.
“The new Queensland Children’s Hospital at South Brisbane will provide up to 400 beds in a highly specialised facility.
“It is full steam ahead for this important project, and I welcome the design team on board.
Abigroup joins other key consultants including Atkinson Project Management; Conrad Gargett & Lyons; Cardno Alexander Brown; Basset Consulting Engineers; Currie & Brown; and Davis Langdon Australia.
The Queensland Children’s Hospital will cost approximately $700 Million in today’s dollars, and the Department of Public Works is managing the contract on behalf of the Queensland Government.
“The size and complexity of these projects attracted interest from some of the industry’s most experienced building and consultancy companies,” Ms Bligh said.
“All of the design team consultants have strong credentials in undertaking major Queensland Hospital projects.
The new Queensland Children’s Hospital, to be built on the Mater Hospital campus, will be a Queensland Health hospital managed in conjunction with Mater Health Services.
Work is currently underway on the master plan with first beds due for completion in 2011 and project completion in 2014.
Health Minister Stephen Robertson said this hospital was just one part of the largest health infrastructure program ever undertaken in Australia.
“The Queensland Children’s Hospital will become one of the world’s best, offering general and tertiary services in the tradition of The Royal Children’s Hospital, Melbourne, The Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital, London and The Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto,” Mr Robertson said.
“This is in line with the recommendations of the Mellis Review of Paediatric Cardiac Services in Queensland and the recommendations in the Queensland Health Systems Review and the Paediatric Taskforce review for a single children’s hospital.
“The site adjacent to the Mater is the best site for the new hospital, offering room for a large hospital close to existing transport links, accommodation and recreational facilities for families and a private paediatric hospital.”
