Minister for Police, Corrective Services and Sport
The Honourable Judy Spence
Some of south-east Queensland’s most experienced crime fighters were recognised today for their long service and loyalty in safeguarding Queensland communities.
Police Minister Judy Spence and Commissioner Bob Atkinson today presented National Medals and clasps to 30 officers from the South Eastern Police Region.
“I believe in Queensland we have one of the finest police services in the world, and like any organisation, its value lies in its employees,” Ms Spence said.
“The South Eastern Region is fortunate to have many officers with extensive knowledge and experience in the area.”
Ms Spence presented the National Medal, which is awarded to those who have served for at least 15 years, to 27 officers.
Another officer was presented with the first clasp recognising 25 years of service, and two officers received their second clasp for 35 years of service.
“This distinguished group with a combined service of 500 years is just a snapshot of the wealth of experience provided by police officers in the South Eastern Region,” Ms Spence said.
“This kind of commitment is rare these days, and we are very fortunate in Queensland to have people who are dedicated to this job for the long haul.
“Local residents can certainly take comfort in the fact the officers in this area have such extensive knowledge and experience.”
A total of 78 police received Queensland Police Service medals or clasps during the ceremony, while four police received their Detective appointments and one officer received an Assistant Commissioner’s Certificate.
Commissioner Atkinson said the medals ceremony is an opportunity for police to be publicly recognised for the excellent and diligent work they perform and for their contribution not only to the Queensland Police Service, but the community as a whole.
“We can contribute the high standing of the Queensland Police Service to the hard work and commitment of those who work within the organisation and who continue to strive for excellence,” Commissioner Atkinson said.
“Every day, without question, our officers continue to put their lives on the line to serve and protect their community. Police do this to make the community in which we live safe for all.”
Ms Spence said the Bligh Government was committed to supporting police in the region and across Queensland.
“Earlier this year the Commissioner and I announced 40 extra police would be provided to the Gold Coast by the end of this year and we are on track to do that,” Ms Spence said.
“I also announced earlier this week that as part of the rollout of 167 extra civilian positions across the state, five civilian positions will be created for the front counters at both Surfers Paradise and Southport and five civilian positions will be created for the watchhouse at Southport.
“This should effectively release 15 police at Surfers Paradise and Southport for operational duties.”
Ms Spence said that additional civilian positions and police positions will also continue to be allocated to the Gold Coast District as they become available.
