Minister for Police, Corrective Services and Sport
The Honourable Judy Spence
Police Minister Judy Spence and Commissioner Bob Atkinson have today officially opened Queensland’s 54th police beat at Norfolk Village.
Ms Spence said the beat brings the total of operational Neighbourhood Police Beats in the South Eastern Police Region to 13.
“The opening of this neighbourhood police beat is great news for the Norfolk Village community, as it will increase their sense of safety and strengthen local partnerships with police,” Ms Spence said.
“This new beat represents a $533,000 investment by the Bligh Government to improve community safety in the Norfolk Village area.
“Local residents and businesses now have improved access to their local police – for reporting incidents, discussing issues of concern or for canvassing new ways to prevent crime in this community.”
Ms Spence said the state government has made a significant commitment to police beats in the South Eastern Region.
“In the past twelve months we have also opened new Police Beats in Jacob’s Well, Biggera Waters, Arundel, Pacific Pines and Eden’s Landing,” Ms Spence said.
“These beats are part of a three-year, $10 million election commitment by the Beattie Government in 2004, to build 25 new beats across the State.
“It is fantastic to see the Government’s commitment to funding expansive capital works projects in Queensland is delivering such excellent results.”
Commissioner Atkinson said police beats provide an immediate point of contact for residents of the community in which they are established.
“That immediacy and opportunity to get to know the local police living and working in your community can be tremendously reassuring,” Commissioner Atkinson said.
“Community-oriented policing is critical to our day-to-day duties. This police beat will help us improve our ability to serve the community as a Police Service.
“Through police beats we find out about the residents in a community and exactly what they need from us.”
Senior Constable Adam Oliphant and Senior Constable Samantha McClymont have now commenced work as the two officers assigned to the police beat.
