Minister for Transport, Trade, Employment and Industrial Relations
The Honourable John Mickel

Motorists preparing for the school holidays have been urged to plan properly so they can be safe when they head out on the roads with the family.

Transport Minister John Mickel said there some simple but effective tips for motorists getting ready for the holidays.

"They should have a good night's sleep beforehand and avoid alcohol for a start," Mr Mickel said.

"When they're working out their schedule, they should calculate in 15-minute breaks every two hours, as well as making sure they have the time to eat properly along the way.

"Speed is always an issue during holiday periods as motorists rush to get to their holiday destinations to make the most of their break.

"They should take the time to pack properly and ensure all loose objects are secure, especially in towed caravans and trailers.

"And when they're about to get going, they should ensure everyone in the vehicle is properly restrained.

"On the road, they must make sure that as well as wearing their seatbelts, they stick to the speed limit, don't drive when they're tired and certainly not if they've been drinking alcohol.

"School holidays are traditionally extremely busy times on our roads and these holidays will be no different."

Mr Mickel said drivers should also take advantage of the many driver-reviver sites operating across Queensland these school holidays offering free refreshments and local advice.
