The Honourable Desley Boyle

International visitors will get a taste of top Queensland desserts, meat, condiments and other fine foods during Australia’s largest culinary exhibition this month.

Queensland Tourism, Regional Development and Industry Minister Desley Boyle said Queensland food and beverage producers would cook up a storm at Fine Food Australia 2007 in Sydney from 24-27 September.

“Queensland produces a wide range of foods, from beef and kangaroo meat, spices and bush condiments, to cakes, tarts and liquored ice-cream,” Ms Boyle said.

“This event is a chance for Queensland firms to show off some of our top products to retail, wholesale and hospitality buyers, as well as about 750 exhibitors from around the world.”

Fourteen Smart State companies will join the Queensland Government display at the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre and showcase their gourmet products to some 25,000 expected visitors, primarily from the Asia Pacific region.

“Last year’s Queensland Government display in Melbourne was a huge success,” Ms Boyle said.

“The participating companies together generated hundreds of new customers and thousands of dollars in new orders from as far afield as China, Dubai and Germany.”

Ms Boyle said food and beverage producers were the bread and butter of Queensland’s manufacturing industries.

“The sector is worth more than $2.8 billion a year in output – that’s about a quarter of the total output generated by all manufacturing industries in Queensland,” she said.

“The Queensland Government’s support for exhibitors at this premier event is about cementing the Smart State’s place on the fine food map.

“We’ve been working closely with manufacturers across the entire sector for a number of years. It’s outstanding to see many of them progressing from small operations into thriving firms that are able to compete with the some of the best on the world stage as a result.”

Ms Boyle said there would be a number of exciting new Queensland products this year.

“Basically Wild Edible Art from the Sunshine Coast, for example, will showcase a new range of stir-through dinner sauces for the first time,” she said.

“A new portion-controlled cheesecake range will be unveiled by Brisbane-based Wicked Products, and Grove Fruit Juice, also from Brisbane, will debut a juice with omega-3.

“Another exhibitor, Gold Coast’s Gourmet Spice Blends, is ready to demonstrate its Tambo Spice with Dukkah, a low-sodium replacement for salt and pepper in cooking.”

Ms Boyle said the Queensland Government had recruited renowned Australian food and wine commentator Peter Howard, who makes regular appearances in the media and has written several cook books, to help spread the word about the quality of the State’s world-class industry.

The Queensland Government will also be joined at Fine Food Australia by partners Gold Coast City Council and the Logan Office of Economic Development.
