The Honourable Lindy Nelson-Carr
Community organisations across the state can now apply for a share of $125,000 in Queensland Government funding to celebrate Seniors Week in 2008.
Seniors Minister Lindy Nelson-Carr said she had called for submissions early to give community organisations time to plan their events for Seniors Week, to be celebrated from Saturday 23 August to Sunday 31 August next year.
“Seniors Week is a great opportunity for everyone to participate in various community activities that celebrate the diversity of older people and promote active ageing,” Ms Nelson-Carr said.
“It takes some time to plan and organise these events so I encourage Queensland communities to start thinking now about activities to celebrate the positive aspects of ageing during Seniors Week 2008.”
Applications close at 5pm on Monday 19 November 2007.
Ms Nelson-Carr said 125 community organisations around the state received Queensland government funding this year to organise activities celebrating older people’s participation in community life.
“Seniors Week 2007 was a great success,” Ms Nelson-Carr said.
“Celebrations included Indigenous and multicultural events, concerts, expos, dances, intergenerational art and sporting activities.
“Next year, Seniors Week will again promote inclusive activities by encouraging Queenslanders of all ages and backgrounds to celebrate the diversity of older people and promote positive ageing to the broader community.”
Applications for grants of between $300 and $1000 will be considered for Seniors Week activities. Amounts over $1000 will be considered for collaborative events or projects.
Ms Nelson-Carr said members of local councils, seniors organisations and community groups were the people that made Seniors Week special.
“The Department of Communities is dedicated to supporting these groups in their planning,” she said.
Funding application forms are available at www.communities.qld.gov.au, by contacting Seniors Enquiry Line on 1300 135 500 or through Department of Communities regional offices.
