The Honourable Lindy Nelson-Carr

It is still not too late for the local disability community to register for next Tuesday’s Shared Visions regional forum at the Empire Theatre in Toowoomba. (25 September)

Disability Services Minister Lindy Nelson-Carr said the forum was an excellent opportunity for people with a disability, their families and carers; as well as service providers and stakeholders from all areas of the disability community; to share their views on disability issues with government representatives.

"This forum is an opportunity for locals with an interest in the disability sector to share their experiences and work together for a better quality of life for people with a disability," Ms Nelson-Carr said.

“We’ve already held seven similar forums across the state and the response has been extremely positive, both from our perspective and from the perspective of those attending.

“Delegates have commented on the excellent balance between presentations, discussions and networking opportunities throughout the day.”

Ms Nelson-Carr said local representatives would lead a range of presentations and discussions to showcase a range of initiatives, including inclusive recreation, early intervention for children with autism, and a collective approach to respite.

"We want to identify strengths and opportunities for the local disability community, and listen to suggestions about how to build a better future for local people with a disability," she said.

“So far there have been some really interesting and innovative presentations that have stimulated a lot of discussion amongst delegates and government representatives.

“Places at the Shared Vision regional forum are limited, therefore, I urge anyone with an interest in the disability sector to register for the forum to ensure a place.

"The visions that we share today, will help us all to shape better communities for tomorrow,” Ms Nelson-Carr said.

A summary of the issues and discussions raised at the Toowoomba forum will be added to the Shared Visions website, and will help to shape the program for the next state forum in 2008.
