The Honourable John Mickel

Three Darling Downs learning centres will continue to open their doors to local jobseekers thanks to renewed State Government funding.

Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations John Mickel said the funding is a continuation of the very successful 2006 initiative to establish learning centres in The Bremer TAFE’s catchment areas

“The Bremer will help 100 people through the learning centres thanks to a $230,050 Skilling Queenslanders for Work grant,” Mr Mickel said.

“The centres at Laidley, Esk and Fernvale are dedicated to giving people who are alienated from the labour market the skills they need to gain work.

“For some people this means obtaining Year 10 Maths or English while others will acquire accredited training in business or community services.

“Access to learning skills such as writing resumes, applying for jobs online and preparing for interviews will also be available to participants.”

The Bremer TAFE Business Development Director Di Hassett said participants would be supported by a mentor who will assist them to overcome learning barriers.

“The Learning Centres will also offer a link between TAFE and the community and will give participants access to computers and information,” Ms Hassett said.

“Participants who enrol in accredited open learning programs will receive tutorial support at the learning centre and via telephone and email.”

The Department of Education, Training and the Arts contributed $206,820 towards accredited training.

The Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative together with its predecessor the Breaking the Unemployment Cycle initiative have helped create more than 124,000 jobs for Queenslanders since 1998.

Skilling Queenslanders for Work is part of the State Government’s $1 billion Queensland Skills Plan which aims to provide individuals and industry with the skills and workforce for the 21st Century.
