A Queensland Government campaign which is helping in the battle of the bulge has won a major award, Sport Minister Judy Spence and Health Minister Stephen Robertson said today.

“The Eat Well Be Active campaign has won the state’s top honour for social marketing in the 2007 Australian Marketing Institute (AMI) Queensland Awards for Marketing Excellence,” Ms Spence said.

“I congratulate all staff who have been involved in this campaign which focuses on making small changes to our everyday lives and finding the right balance between food and activity.”

“I encourage Queenslanders to make some positive changes to their health and find 30 minutes for activity each day and Eat Well Be Active.”

“It’s the little things that can make all the difference and you don’t have to make drastic changes to achieve results.

“It is really easy to get active every day and break up the 30 minutes of activity into 3 x 10 minute blocks – like taking the stairs instead of the elevator, or getting off the bus one stop early and walking the rest of the way home.”

Health Minister Stephen Robertson said the Eat Well Be Active campaign was a key initiative to emerge from the Queensland Government’s Obesity Summit in 2006.

“Obesity is one of the major causes of preventable chronic disease which can result in premature death and avoidable stays in hospital,” he said.

“There’s a tsunami of chronic disease heading our way as our population ages and the demand for acute hospital care grows.

“Getting the right balance between eating well and being physically active is the best way Queenslanders can maintain a healthy bodyweight and reduce their risk of diseases like type 2 diabetes, heart disease, kidney disease and some types of cancer.”

Mr Robertson said the Eat Well Be Active campaign was one of a number of State Government community health awareness campaigns designed to encourage Queenslanders to adopt a healthier lifestyle.

“Queensland Health is also achieving positive results from its Go for 2 & 5 fruit and vegetable campaign and our campaigns to encourage people to quit smoking are reaping health dividends,” he said

Ms Spence said the Eat Well Be Active campaign is supported by television, radio and press advertising, and a website featuring activity and nutrition guidelines, recipes and a personalised diary to help people track their weekly progress.

“The Eat Well Be Active campaign will now become a finalist in the Australian AMI Awards in Sydney in October.”
