The Honourable John Mickel

Sixty-four multicultural jobseekers have put down the books to celebrate their newfound skills in the labour starved aged care and child care industries.

Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations John Mickel said participants gained the skills on a $232,700 Skilling Queenslanders for Work project run by the Multicultural Community Centre.

“Participants did accredited training and gained a Certificate III in either Aged Care or Children’s Services – the minimum qualification required to work in these industries,” Mr Mickel said.

“While unemployment is at a 30-year low of 3.5 per cent in Queensland, there are still people out there who are having difficulty finding work, particularly multicultural jobseekers.

“Skilling Queenslanders for Work projects like this give people the skills they need to participate in their communities and contribute to the growth of Queensland’s economy.

“The value of the project is in the job outcomes and I’m pleased to say that 49 participants have found work already and I’m sure this number will grow.”

Multicultural Community Centre Director Jeannie Mok said the training was backed up by English language, literacy and life skills classes to overcome specific work barriers that many members of the multicultural community face.

“These industries will benefit from skilled staff who have the cultural knowledge to care for culturally and linguistically diverse clients in a sensitive way,” Ms Mok said.

The Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative together with its predecessor the Breaking the Unemployment Cycle initiative have helped create more than 124,000 jobs for Queenslanders since 1998.

The Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative is part of the State Government’s $1 billion Queensland Skills Plan which aims to provide individuals and industry with the skills and workforce for the 21st Century.
