MINISTER ANNOUNCES MULTICULTURAL AWARDS WINNERS

Minister for Multicultural Affairs Lindy Nelson-Carr tonight honoured individuals, schools, businesses, community based organisations and government agencies that have helped advance multiculturalism in Queensland.
During the 2007 Queensland Multicultural Awards presentation at Roma Street Parkland Ms Nelson-Carr said it was important to celebrate and recognise those who have played a role promoting diversity in the community.
“The Queensland Multicultural Awards has given the Queensland Government the opportunity to recognise and celebrate the many people who have dedicated their time and efforts to the cultural diversity of Queensland,” Ms Nelson-Carr said.
“Our State’s diversity is one of Queensland’s greatest social and economic assets and the Queensland Multicultural Awards is just one way of celebrating this in our community.
“The award winners have all contributed to the Queensland Government’s vision of ensuring harmony, mutual respect and fairness within our community.”
Ms Nelson-Carr said she was also delighted to announce the line up of performers and activities planned as part of the 2007 Queensland Multicultural Festival.
“The annual festival is expected to attract more than 20,000 people to Roma Street Parkland on Sunday 14th October.
“The festival is a free event showcasing Queensland’s unique multicultural community using a broad range of art forms such as music, dance, literature, theatre, film, sport, photography, visual art and traditional and contemporary cultural activities.”
In 2007, the program of events has expended to include a series of events in the lead up to the main festival day including:
• Diversity Writes literature event headlined by renowned author Tom Keneally on 30 September – with the State Library of Queensland, the Courier Mail and the Big Book Club.
• Four Films Four Fiddlers film festival, brining together four unique films and four virtuoso fiddlers – with Palace Centro Cinemas.
• A football match at Suncorp Stadium – with Queensland Roars Against Racism Champions, the Queensland Roar Football Club, kicking off against visiting team Wellington Phoenix from New Zealand as part of the 2007 Hyundai A-League on 5 October at Suncorp Stadium.
• Theatre program – Queensland Shakespeare Ensemble present a colourful reworking of Much Ado About Nothing.
• The Uppin’ the Amphi multicultural festival opening night concert opening night concert which will be held for the first time, providing an opportunity for a young audience to experience newly-arrived vibrant drummers from Rwanda and some popular rock, world music and hip-hop with popular rock.
